Helsinki Biennial

Catapulta collaborated on the third edition of the Helsinki Biennial. Curated by Blanca de la Torre, currently director of the IVAM, and Kati Kivinen, the exhibition titled “Shelter: Below and beyond, becoming and belonging” explored the concepts of shelter and non-human existence. This edition drew inspiration from Vallisaari Island in Finland, an uninhabited locale preserved to protect its ecosystem. The event presented the work of 37 artists, including Spanish artists Regina de Miguel and Juan Zamora, who both received Catapulta’s support.

“Juan Zamora’s immersive site-specific installation ‘To Embody an Island’ in Vallisaari Island is based on his research into bioluminescence, the ability of certain organisms to emit light. […] The luminous perspective of plants broadens our appreciation of the natural world and raises profound questions about consciousness and the interconnectedness of life.” — excerpt from Blanca de la Torre, co-curator of the Biennial.

“Regina de Miguel presents ‘Ofrenda’, a series of paintings and a mural covering a long wall of the Helsinki Art Museum. In them, de Miguel develops a distinctive and highly poetic language, based on an imaginary that interweaves elements from science fiction, astronomy, botany, geology or telluric disciplines, giving rise to fantastic creatures and hybridisations that transcend mineral/vegetable, living/inert, alien/terrestrial and microcosm/macrocosm dualisms.”
